Notes In 1918, as World War I was ending, President Woodrow Wilson sent a group of men to North Russia where they fought the Bolshevik Red Army from September 1918 to June 1919. Officially designated as the American North Russia Expeditionary Force, it became known as the Polar Bear Expedition.
