|Title||Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit: Young Adult Division|
|Collection||Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Records|
|Date||1951-1992 (Bulk 1978-1992)|
|Scope & Content||This collection mainly deals with the period of the Young Adult Division, although some materials are included from the period where it was known as the "Junior Division." Materials from NEXTGen are not included in this collection. The bulk of the materials were already organized by the fiscal year (June 1 to May 31). When possible, we tried to maintain the original order and arranged the folders chronologically.|
The Young Adult Division (YAD) of the Jewish Federation began on June 8, 1938 as the "Junior Section" of the Detroit Service Group. Young adult members were represented on boards of Federation agencies, and participated in the annual Allied Jewish Campaign. Although group activities diminished during World War II, the Junior Section reactivated in 1946 and became an important part of the Allied Jewish Campaign. It was renamed the "Junior Division," and in 1953, incorporated into the Jewish Welfare Federation. The focus of the group combined fundraising, communal activities, leadership training, and social events for young Jewish adults ages 21 to 45.
In 1983, the group changed its name to "Young Adult Division." In March of 2012, another change occurred, as the Young Adult Division combined with the CommunityNEXT and Community Birthright programs under the new name NEXTGen.
